Passover Symbolism

Dec 9, 2024 | The Experience of Salvation, The Lord's Supper

Have you ever wondered why Christians eat bread and drink grape juice during church services? This unique tradition, the Lord’s Supper, has a deep and fascinating history connected to Passover. Let’s explore the amazing symbolism evident in the modern version of Passover and what it means for us today.

What is Passover, and what does it symbolise?

Passover is a unique celebration that started a long time ago when the Hebrew people were slaves in Egypt. God told them to sacrifice a perfect lamb, put its blood on their doorposts, and eat the lamb with special bread and bitter herbs. This act of obedience protected their homes from the terrible judgement of the Egyptians. This event marked the beginning of the Hebrew nation’s freedom. The symbolism of Passover reminds us of God’s mercy and deliverance.

In the New Testament, Jesus added new meaning to the Passover during the Last Supper. He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body.” He then took the cup, gave thanks, and shared it with them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:26-28, NLT).

Why is the Symbolism of Passover Important?

Passover symbolism is important because it connects the Old Testament story of the Israelites’ deliverance with Jesus’ sacrifice for humanity, outlined in the New Testament. Just as the blood of the lamb saved the Israelites, we are saved by the precious blood of Christ. In John 1:29 (NLT), John the Baptist says, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Passover also teaches us about humility and service. Before the Last Supper, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, showing them how to serve one another with love and humility. In John 13:14-15 (NLT), Jesus says, “And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
