Follower of Jesus: Walking in His Footsteps

To follow Jesus means to live daily in His example of love, compassion, and unwavering faith. Jesus demonstrated these virtues perfectly in His earthly life, teaching us through words and His actions and character. As followers of Jesus, we are called not merely to believe in Him but to embody His teachings in every aspect of our lives.

This article explores the true essence of being a follower of Christ—beyond simply attending church services or reading Scripture—and provides practical insights into how we can live a life that authentically reflects Jesus.

Understanding Who Jesus Is

God became human in Jesus Christ, revealing His character through love, humility, and sacrifice. Christ’s mission on earth was profoundly clear. He came to offer salvation and to exemplify the perfect human life aligned with God’s will (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). His death and resurrection open the door to eternal life for all who believe (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Created in God’s Image

Every human being was created in God’s image, which means we are endowed with individuality and the freedom to choose (Genesis 1:26-27). This image, though marred by sin, is restored by Jesus, helping us reclaim our original purpose—to glorify God and reflect His love to others. As followers of Christ, embracing our true nature means aligning ourselves with His teachings and reflecting His compassion in our daily interactions.

Living in Obedience to God’s Commandments

Following Jesus involves respecting and adhering to God’s commandments (Exodus 20:3-17). These commandments form the moral compass guiding us in relationships—with God and others. As Jesus stated, the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart and our neighbour as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). Genuine obedience isn’t merely about following rules; it’s about embodying God’s love in our lives.

Embracing a Christ-Centered Lifestyle

Living a Christ-centered life is not about restrictions or rules, but about transformation and joy. When we accept Christ, we become temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This profound truth encourages us to treat our bodies and minds with respect and care, abstain from harmful substances and practices, and engage in healthy, uplifting activities. It’s a life that reflects His purity, joy, and health, and it’s a life worth celebrating.

Celebrating God’s Gift of the Sabbath

God instituted the Sabbath as a weekly opportunity to pause, rest, and reconnect deeply with Him and each other (Exodus 20:8-11). Observing the Sabbath isn’t merely a ritual—it’s a celebration of God’s creation, redemption, and ongoing relationship with humanity. It offers us a glimpse into eternity, reminding us of the peaceful, restorative fellowship we will experience in God’s eternal kingdom.

Marriage and Family: Reflecting God’s Love

Marriage, established by God in Eden, symbolizes the loving relationship between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). Healthy family relationships grounded in mutual love, respect, and responsibility reflect God’s intent. They are a powerful testimony of His redeeming love to the world. As followers of Jesus, we cherish and nurture these relationships, fostering environments where spiritual growth and emotional security thrive.

The Hope of Resurrection

Understanding life and death from a biblical perspective offers profound hope. Scripture teaches that death is like sleep—a temporary state until the glorious resurrection at Jesus’ second coming (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). This hope is not just a distant promise, but a present reality that empowers us to live boldly for Christ today, knowing our ultimate victory in Him is assured.

Practical Steps to Follow Jesus Daily

  • Express kindness: Speak gently, serve willingly, and demonstrate patience.
  • Forgive freely: Let go of bitterness, modelling Christ’s forgiveness.
  • Trust unwaveringly: Rely on God’s promises, knowing His plans are for good.
  • Share Christ boldly: Reflect Jesus’ love through your words and deeds.
