God’s Gift of Purpose

Introduction

This sermon explores the concept of purpose in a Christian’s life, emphasizing that our ultimate purpose is to be disciples of Christ. The speaker argues that being a disciple is inseparable from being a Christian and that the primary marker of discipleship is love. This love is not just human kindness, but a selfless, sacrificial love that mirrors Christ’s love for us. The sermon challenges listeners to develop a deeper relationship with God, experience His love, and then share that love with others as a way of fulfilling their purpose and making disciples.

📖 Daily Reading Plan

Day 1: Discovering God’s Love

Reading: John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:7-21
Devotional: God’s love is the foundation of our faith and purpose. As we read about Jesus’ commandment to love one another, reflect on how you’ve experienced God’s love in your own life. How has it transformed you? Consider ways you can demonstrate this divine love to others, even those who are difficult to love. Remember, our ability to love others flows from first experiencing God’s unconditional love for us. Today, pray for a deeper understanding of God’s love and the strength to share it with those around you.

Day 2: Answering the Call to Discipleship

Reading: Luke 5:1-11, Matthew 28:19-20
Devotional: Simon Peter’s encounter with Jesus illustrates the transformative power of following Christ. Like Peter, we’re called to leave our comfort zones and become “fishers of men.” Reflect on areas of your life where you might be holding back from fully committing to God’s call. What “nets” do you need to leave behind? Remember, discipleship is not just about personal growth, but about sharing God’s love with others. Today, ask God to reveal one specific way you can step out in faith to serve Him and others.

Day 3: The Daily Cross

Reading: Luke 9:23-26, Galatians 2:20
Devotional: Jesus calls us to “take up our cross daily.” This isn’t about suffering for its own sake, but about dying to self so that Christ can live through us. What aspects of your character or habits need to “die” so that Christ’s love can shine more brightly? Remember, this is a daily choice – to put aside our own desires and live for God’s purposes. Today, identify one area where you can practice self-denial for the sake of growing closer to Christ and serving others.

Day 4: Love as the Mark of Discipleship

Reading: 1 Corinthians 13, Colossians 3:12-17
Devotional: Love is the distinguishing characteristic of Christ’s disciples. Not just any love, but a selfless, sacrificial love that reflects God’s heart. As you read about the qualities of love, examine your own life. How well do you embody patience, kindness, and forgiveness? Remember, this kind of love is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. Today, ask God to fill you with His love and to help you express it, especially to someone you find challenging.

Day 5: Finding Purpose in God’s Mission

Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8, Acts 1:8
Devotional: God calls each of us to participate in His mission of love and reconciliation. Like Isaiah, we’re invited to respond, “Here I am, send me!” This doesn’t necessarily mean becoming a missionary in a foreign land; it means being available to God right where you are. Reflect on your unique gifts and circumstances. How might God be calling you to be His ambassador of love in your family, workplace, or community? Remember, our ultimate purpose is found in aligning our lives with God’s mission. Today, pray for open eyes to see the opportunities around you to share God’s love and for the courage to say “yes” to His call.
