Great Faith in the Bible: Legacies of Courage, Wisdom, and Worship
What does great faith look like? The Bible doesn’t just define faith—it shows it in action. Some of the most potent examples come from women whose stories demonstrate courage, devotion, and godly service. In their wise decisions, these women didn’t seek recognition, but their legacies echo through time, showing us what it means to trust God and impact others.
In this article, we explore the lives of six women of the Bible who displayed remarkable faith. Their stories reveal how ordinary people can leave an extraordinary legacy when their hearts are committed to God.
1. Miriam: Faith That Praises in Victory
After Israel’s miraculous escape from Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea, Miriam—sister of Moses and Aaron—led the women in joyful celebration. With a tambourine in hand, she sang, “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously” (Exodus 15:20-21).
Miriam’s story reminds us that great faith rejoices in God’s deliverance and inspires others to do the same. Her worship leadership left a legacy of praise.
2. Abigail: Faith That Acts Wisely and Humbly
Abigail, described as “intelligent and beautiful” (1 Samuel 25:3), intervened when her foolish husband Nabal insulted David. With grace and wisdom, she averted bloodshed by humbling herself and offering gifts to David. Her quick thinking saved lives and calmed a future king.
Abigail’s legacy is a powerful example of how faith can manifest through peacemaking, humility, and discernment.
3. Huldah: Faith That Speaks God’s Truth Boldly
In a time when prophets were typically men, God used Huldah, a lesser-known but faithful prophetess. When King Josiah sought guidance, her message from the Lord led to national reform (2 Chronicles 34:22-28).
Huldah’s story teaches us that God calls faithful messengers regardless of status. Her obedience helped spark revival in Judah.
4. Esther: Faith That Risks Everything for Others
Esther’s story is well-known, but its impact is timeless. She faced death by approaching the king to save her people. Her famous words, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16), continue to inspire bravery and trust in God’s providence.
Esther shows us that great faith often involves great risk, but it also brings great reward when we follow God’s call.
5. The Samaritan Woman: Faith That Tells the World
Though nameless, the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4) became one of the first evangelists. After meeting Jesus, she left her water jar behind and ran to share the good news with her village. “Come, see a man who told me everything I did!” she declared.
Her testimony led many to believe. Her story reminds us that no one is disqualified from sharing the Gospel—faith begins with a transformed heart and a willing voice.
6. Dorcas (Tabitha): Faith That Serves Quietly but Powerfully
In Acts 9, we meet Dorcas, a woman known for her good works and acts of charity. She made clothes for people with low incomes and cared for widows. When she died, her community was devastated, and Peter raised her from the dead.
Dorcas’ legacy teaches us that behind-the-scenes service is deeply valued in God’s kingdom. Faith can look like a needle and thread in the hands of someone who loves well.
What Kind of Legacy Are You Leaving?
These women lived in different times and circumstances but shared something in common: great faith expressed through their actions. Whether leading worship, offering wise counsel, speaking truth, showing courage, sharing Jesus, or serving practically, each woman used her gifts for God’s glory.
As 1 Peter 4:10 (WEB) says:
“As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10, World English Bible)
So, what about us?
- Are we using our influence for good like Esther?
- Are we making peace like Abigail?
- Are we sharing the Gospel like the Samaritan woman?
- Are we encouraging others through acts of service like Dorcas?
God doesn’t ask for perfection—He asks for willing hearts. Every believer, regardless of background or status, is called to leave a legacy that points to Christ.
A Call to Unity and Service
Jesus prayed, “That they may all be one… so that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Our unity as the body of Christ strengthens our witness. Just as these women of faith made their mark, we too are invited to serve, speak, and live in ways that reveal God’s love.
Let us rise to the challenge of faith, wherever God has placed us. Let’s leave behind excuses and embrace the opportunities before us. Your legacy may not make the headlines, but in heaven, every act of faith is remembered.
