Understanding Our Mission
Did you know that over 1.2 billion Hindus in the world have yet to hear about Jesus in a way that resonates with their culture? Many South Asians, particularly in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, grow up in deeply rooted traditions that shape their spiritual lives. As followers of Christ, we are called to reach all people, regardless of their background. 1 Peter 3:15 reminds us, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” If we want to share the Good News with Hindus, we must first understand their beliefs, show them Christ’s love, and break down cultural barriers through meaningful relationships.
Hinduism: A Way of Life, Not Just a Religion
Hinduism is more than just a religion; it is a way of life deeply woven into culture, traditions, and family. It includes a variety of beliefs, rituals, and philosophies that shape every aspect of a Hindu’s daily routine. Unlike Christianity, which teaches salvation through Jesus Christ, Hinduism teaches that individuals must achieve moksha (liberation) through their own efforts, often over many lifetimes. This is an important distinction because while Christians rely on grace, Hindus often feel the burden of working toward their own salvation.
Despite differences, Hindus value family, respect for elders, and acts of service—values that align with Christian teachings. Rather than seeing these differences as obstacles, we can use common ground to build bridges of understanding.
Building Bridges Through Friendship and Respect
When sharing Jesus with Hindus, our first step is not to argue theology but to build friendships. Hindus are generally hospitable and appreciate genuine relationships. Just as Jesus connected with people through acts of love, we too can reflect His character in how we interact with Hindus. Simple acts of kindness—like sharing a meal, helping with a need, or showing interest in their culture—can open doors for deeper conversations about faith.
Rather than criticizing Hindu beliefs, we should focus on sharing our own experiences with Jesus. Our testimony of God’s love, peace, and assurance of salvation is a powerful way to connect. Just as Paul adapted to different cultures for the sake of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:22), we too should be willing to meet people where they are.
Overcoming Misunderstandings About Christianity
Many Hindus misunderstand Christianity. Some see it as a Western religion rather than a universal faith for all people. Others may have been taught that conversion means abandoning their family and culture. We must show that following Jesus does not erase one’s cultural identity but instead brings true fulfillment.
Additionally, baptism is often seen as a sign of rejecting family heritage. Instead of pressuring someone to make an immediate decision, we should allow the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts. Jesus never forced anyone to follow Him; He simply invited them to “Come, follow me” (Matthew 4:19). Likewise, our role is to plant seeds, trusting that God will bring the harvest in His time.
Practical Ways to Share Jesus with Hindus
- Pray for Them – Prayer is powerful. Ask God to open hearts and create opportunities to share His love.
- Show Genuine Interest – Learn about their traditions and listen to their spiritual journey without judgment.
- Offer Acts of Kindness – Help in practical ways, as Jesus did, to demonstrate God’s love in action.
- Share Your Testimony – A personal story of how Jesus has changed your life is more impactful than theological debates.
